Chapter 2: He Said It Three Times

PART 2 ⬇️
Ethan didn't move toward the door.
He crouched beside Avery and kept his voice low.
"The other syringe — did you see him put it in the backpack?"
"He packed it before we left the house," she said.
"He told us it was Elsie's medicine.
But Elsie doesn't have medicine.
She never did."
Elsie was barely conscious on the floor now, her breathing slow and uneven.
Ethan stayed calm for the girls, but his jaw was tight.
Outside, Nolan knocked again.
His voice had changed — smoother now, almost gentle.
"Ethan, I know how this looks.
These girls have been through a lot.
Their mother has a history of coaching them.
Please, just open the door."
Avery's head snapped up.
"He's lying.
Mom doesn't even know where we are."
Ethan stood.
Through the glass, he watched Nolan pull out his phone and make a call.
Thirty seconds later, Ethan's own phone buzzed.
The screen read: SHERIFF DUNBAR.
He let it ring.
Then Avery tugged his sleeve.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Deputy…
there's something else.
I heard him on the phone last night.
He said Elsie wasn't supposed to remember the appointment."
Ethan went still.
"What appointment, Avery?"
She looked at her sister, then back at him.
"I don't know.
But he said it three times."
