Chapter 2: The Name He Had Been Refusing to Look At

Part 2 ⬇️
That night, Luca sat alone in the study with the toxicology report on the desk and a name forming in his mind that he had been refusing to look at directly for three days.
There was only one person who had access to his food, his drink, and his medical staff during those months.
Only one person who had quietly taken control of the empire's finances while Luca sat in a wheelchair believing his own body had betrayed him.
His brother.
Marco Costello.
Luca opened his laptop and pulled up twelve years of financial records.
It took him forty minutes to find the first transfer.
Then the second.
Then seventeen more.
Marco had been moving money out of the estate since the first year of Luca's paralysis.
Slowly.
Carefully.
The way a man moves things when he believes the person watching will never stand up again.
Luca picked up his phone and called his head of security.
"Find out where Marco is tonight," he said.
"Don't tell him I asked."
There was a pause.
"Mr.
Costello…
Marco was here this afternoon.
He came to see the new housekeeper.
He said he was welcoming her to the estate." Another pause.
"He spent a long time talking to her little girl."
Luca's hand tightened on the phone.
Maya.
Marco had already seen Maya.
---
What did Marco say to Maya — and does he already know who she is?
The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
