Chapter 2: What Grandma Kept in Her Handbag

The room went silent.
A voice came through the speaker.
A man's voice.
Jason's voice.
"She won't find out.
She never pays attention to anything."
Then a woman laughed.
My daughter's face crumpled.
Jason lunged for the phone.
"That's PRIVATE—"
Mom pulled it back without flinching.

Mom didn't move.
"I've been carrying this for six weeks," she said quietly.
"Six weeks, watching my granddaughter smile at you like you deserve it."

Then Jason turned to me.
Not to Claire.
To me.
"If you let her do this today, I will make sure you regret it."
I looked at my daughter's face.
And I knew.
This wasn't the first time he'd said something like that to her.
Mom pressed PLAY again.
There was more.
