Chapter 2: The Name I Didn't Recognize

Part 2 ⬇️
I kept my voice steady.
"I bought the food truck, Brad."
Silence.
Then I heard him cover the phone and say something to the boys.
A second later, Pete's voice came through clearly.
"Mom, are you serious right now?
That's our savings."
*Our* savings.
The same savings that paid for Pete's motorcycle.
Brad's car upgrade.
Justin's gaming setup.
Mike's tournament fees.
I didn't say any of that.
I just said, "Happy birthday to me."
Brad came back on the line.
His voice had dropped, which was somehow worse than the shouting.
"Sophie.
You reverse that payment tonight, or I swear we are going to have a very serious conversation when I get home."
"I look forward to it," I said.
And I hung up.
My hands were shaking.
But I didn't cry this time.
I sat back down at the kitchen table — the one I had set for four, with the pasta I had made from scratch, with the balloons I had already thrown away — and I finished my cupcake.
Twenty minutes later, Brad texted again.
It wasn't an apology.
It was a screenshot.
He had already called the bank.
And that wasn't even the part that stopped my heart.
It was the name I saw copied into that message thread.
A name I didn't recognize.
