Chapter 2: What the Silence Told Him

Ethan didn't move.
He stood in the doorway with his keys on the floor and his eyes on Lily, and something in his face broke open in a way Victoria had never seen before.
"Ethan." Victoria's voice was sharp.
"She had no business being in here."
He didn't answer her.
He crossed the room slowly and crouched down in front of Lily.
The little girl was still on the floor, clutching Button, her lip trembling but her eyes — those gray-green eyes — steady and watching him.
"Are you hurt?" he asked quietly.
Lily shook her head.
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he reached out and gently picked her up off the marble.
"Ethan, what are you doing?" Victoria said.
"She's the maid's child.
Put her down."
Rosa appeared in the doorway.
She had run down two flights of stairs.
Her hair had come loose.
She was breathing hard.
And when she saw Ethan holding Lily, she stopped completely.
Their eyes met across the room.
Something passed between them that had no name and needed none.
"Rosa," Ethan said.
His voice was very quiet.
"How old is she?"
Rosa's hand found the doorframe.
"Three," she whispered.
Ethan looked back at Lily.
He did the math.
His jaw tightened.
"When is her birthday?"
Rosa couldn't answer.
And that silence told him everything.
