Chapter 2: The Name on the Back of the Photo

I grabbed the door frame to stop myself from falling.
Inside the unit were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Neatly stacked.
Labeled in my husband's handwriting.
But that wasn't what made my knees buckle.
Against the far wall was a crib.
A small white crib.
Still assembled.
With a folded yellow blanket draped over the side.
Next to it, a cardboard box with the flap open.
I walked toward it slowly, like I was moving through water.
Inside the box were photographs.
Of a woman I didn't recognize.
Of a child — a little boy — at different ages.
First steps.
Birthday cake.
A school backpack.
And in almost every photo, my husband was there.
Smiling.
I turned the most recent photo over with shaking hands.
On the back, in his handwriting:
*"Daniel, age 7.
September."*
My phone rang.
It was him.
I stared at his name on the screen for a long moment.
Then I answered.
"Hey," he said, his voice completely calm.
"Just checking in.
How's your day?"
I couldn't speak.
"Hello?
You there?"
I looked down at the photo in my hand.
"Who is Daniel?" I said quietly.
The silence on the other end lasted a very long time.
