Chapter 2: What Happened to That Document

The room went silent.

Even the broken crystal stopped shifting on the floor.

Daniel stepped forward and grabbed my arm.

"Emma.

Please.

Not here.

Not now."

I pulled free.

"Then when, Daniel?

After he hurts her again?"

Lily was still on the floor, pressed against the wall, her little knees drawn up to her chest.

She wasn't crying anymore.

That was worse.

A five-year-old who had already learned to go quiet.

Richard straightened his jacket like nothing had happened.

"You're hysterical," he said.

"As always."

"I have the deed," I said.

Three words.

That was all.

Richard's hand stopped moving.

Daniel made a sound I had never heard from him before.

Something between a warning and a plea.

"Emma—"

"My mother left this house to me." I kept my eyes on Richard.

"Not to you.

Not to Daniel.

To me.

Signed.

Filed.

Witnessed."

Richard's jaw tightened.

Then he smiled.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"You should ask your husband what happened to that document."

I turned to Daniel.

He wouldn't look at me.
