Chapter 2: The Name She Never Said

Daniel took the envelope from my hands before I could stop him.

Margaret made a sound I had never heard from her before.

Low.

Almost desperate.

"Daniel, don't."

He looked at her.

"Why not?"

She had no answer.

His hands weren't steady as he tore it open.

I watched his eyes move across the page.

Once.

Then again, slower.

The color left his face.

"She's mine," he said quietly.

"Sophie is mine."

Margaret said nothing.

"Mom." His voice cracked.

"You knew."

Still nothing.

"You knew and you still—" He turned toward the porch.

Toward Sophie, still sitting against that post.

Still in her princess dress.

Still waiting.

Something crossed his face that I couldn't name.

Then Margaret spoke.

"It doesn't matter what that paper says."

Daniel turned slowly.

"What?"

"There are things about this family you don't understand, Daniel.

Things I have protected you from your entire life."

"What are you talking about?"

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she said a name.

A man's name.

One I had never heard before.

And Daniel went completely still.

Like he already knew it.

Like some part of him had always known it.
