Chapter 2: What She Wrote Every Night

Isabella did not cry.
She straightened her robe, lifted her chin, and smiled.
"One bad day," she said.
"That's all this is.
Every mother has one bad day."
My attorney opened the folder without a word.
Isabella's smile held for exactly three seconds.
Then she saw the bank statement on top.
"You froze my accounts." Her voice dropped.
"Nathan.
You cannot do this."
"They were never your accounts."
She turned to the officers.
"He's punishing me for disciplining his daughter.
That's all this is.
Ask Maya — she'll tell you."
Maya pressed closer against my side.
Isabella's eyes moved to her.
Something passed across her face.
Not guilt.
Calculation.
"Maya, sweetheart.
Tell them what really happened today."
My daughter said nothing.
"Maya." Isabella's voice sharpened.
"Tell them."
Maya looked up at me.
Then she reached into her school cardigan pocket and placed something on the kitchen table.
A small notebook.
Worn at the edges.
Pages filled front to back in a child's careful handwriting.
Dates.
Times.
What she had been told to do.
What she had not been allowed to eat.
Thirty-seven days of it.
Written down in secret.
Every single night.
Isabella stared at the notebook.
"She planned this," she whispered.
"A nine-year-old planned this."
My attorney looked at Isabella over the top of his glasses.
"No," he said quietly.
"She survived this."
But what no one in that room knew yet — not even me — was what Maya had written on the very last page.
