Chapter 2: The Envelope She Was Never Supposed to Open

Thomas came back in less than an hour.

"Her name is Maya Vance.

Married to Richard Vance for six years.

No listed employer.

No property.

No credit history before 2018."

Julian frowned.

"Before 2018?"

"It's like she didn't exist before that year."

Julian looked down at the photo Thomas had pulled — Maya at a charity gala, seven years ago, standing next to a silver-haired man in a tuxedo.

She looked younger.

Her hair was styled.

Her dress was not a waitress uniform.

"Who is the man beside her?"

Thomas went quiet for a moment.

"That's Edward Whitmore," he said carefully.

"The founder of Whitmore Capital.

He d*ed in 2018.

Left everything to a daughter who was never found."

Julian set the photo down slowly.

"Pull the Whitmore estate file.

Tonight."

Meanwhile, Richard was still celebrating when his phone buzzed.

It was Vanessa.

*"The video hit 2 million views.

She's finished.

Nobody will believe a word she says now."*

Richard smiled and poured another drink.

He had no idea that in a quiet bedroom down the hall, Lily had pressed her small hand against her mother's cheek and whispered, "Mama, are we going to be okay?"

Maya kissed her daughter's forehead.

"We're going to be more than okay, baby."

She opened the second suitcase.

Beneath the folded clothes was a sealed envelope she had never opened.

Her mother's handwriting was on the front.

*Only open this when you have nothing left to lose.*

Her hands were shaking.

What was inside that envelope — and what did Julian find in the Whitmore file?

The truth is bigger than anyone expected.
