Chapter 2: It Wasn't You

Part 2 ⬇️
The officer held up the folder and asked Mason directly.
"Where did you get this?"
Mason said nothing.
He just stared at the ground.
But Teresa wasn't finished.
Even in handcuffs, she turned to me with cold eyes.
"You think you can stop this, Connor?
That house is in my name now.
I had it changed two months ago.
You were too busy working to notice."
The room went completely still.
I looked at the deed.
Then I looked at my mother.
"That's not possible.
I never signed anything."
She smiled.
"You didn't have to."
That was when the officer pulled a second document from the folder.
A signature page.
My name was at the bottom.
Except I had never seen that page in my life.
My hands were shaking when Amy touched my arm from behind.
She had come back inside, Frederick still wrapped against her chest.
"Connor," she said quietly.
"There's something I never told you.
Three weeks ago, a man came to the house while you were at work.
He said he was from your bank.
Teresa let him in.
I thought it was normal.
But he had Connor sign something.
Except..." She stopped.
"Except what?"
Her voice dropped.
"It wasn't you."
