Chapter 2: What He Carried in the Pocket

Part 2 ⬇️
It was a photograph.
Two of them, actually — pressed together, edges worn soft from being handled so many times.
The first one I recognized immediately.
Aaron, age seven, sitting on a hospital bed in a paper gown, grinning at the camera like it was the best day of his life.
And beside him, in that same red dress she wore every single time she visited, was his sister.
Lily.
My daughter.
His twin.
She d*ed fourteen months ago.
We never made it to her graduation.
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped them.
The second photo I had never seen before.
Aaron must have taken it himself, without telling me.
It was Lily, in her last weeks, lying in the hospital bed — and she was holding up a piece of paper with words written in her handwriting.
*"Wear the red dress for both of us, Aaron.
Walk for me too."*
I couldn't breathe.
Behind me, one of the mothers who had been laughing leaned forward.
Her voice came out small and ashamed.
"What…
what does it say?"
I couldn't answer her.
Because Aaron had dropped to one knee in the aisle, right there in front of six hundred people, and he was crying now — really crying — and he whispered something I almost didn't hear.
"I walked for her, Mom.
But I need to tell you something about Lily that I've been keeping since the night she was g*ne."
---
What secret had Aaron been carrying alone since Lily d*ed?
What did Lily ask him to do — and why couldn't he tell his mother until now?
