Chapter 2: The Message on Camilla’s Phone

Camilla’s fingers tightened around the tray.
“I shouldn’t stay,” she said.
“I was told to use the rear entrance, leave the cake, and speak to no one.”
The groom’s smile vanished.
“Told by whom?”
The bride stepped between them.
“She must have misunderstood.
This isn’t the time for a scene.”
Camilla lowered her eyes.
“I have the instructions on my phone.”
“You don’t need to show anyone,” the bride snapped.
“You’ve delivered the cake.
You can go.”
The room fell quiet.
The groom held out his hand.
“Camilla, please show me.”
Her hands shook as she opened the message.
The bride’s name appeared at the top.
Enter through the kitchen.
Don’t speak to the guests, and don’t tell anyone you made it.
The groom read it twice.
“Why would you hide the woman who created our cake?”
“It was supposed to be a surprise,” the bride said quickly.
Then Camilla’s phone lit up with another message—one the bride had sent days earlier.
The groom read the first line over her shoulder, and all color drained from his face.
“What does she mean,” he whispered, “when she says I can never know who this recipe belonged to?”
