Chapter 1: The Room Above the House

By twenty-nine weeks pregnant, I had stopped calling it an attic.

An attic sounded dusty.

Harmless.

This room was a cage.

My mother-in-law called it my "quiet suite."

Every night, my husband carried his phone upstairs.

He placed it on the dresser.

She prepared the tube.

And strangers watched while they humiliated me.

They told the neighborhood I was on bed rest.

Too emotional for visitors.

Too unstable to leave.

What they did not know—

was that a grocery driver had spotted me at the window.

And the next time she came back,

she slipped a cheap phone inside a pack of baby wipes.

I started recording everything.

Their voices.

The feed bag.

The livestream comments.

The threats.

The plan to take my baby.

Then one Friday night, my husband smiled and said,

"Tonight is the finale."

My mother-in-law leaned close and whispered,

"After this, nobody will believe a word you say."

May you like

So I looked straight into his phone—

and said the one sentence they never expected.
