Chapter 2: The Drawing That Broke Everything Open

Part 2 ⬇️
Julian didn't fire her.
He couldn't move.
He stood in that hallway staring at the maid's face — really looking at her for the first time — and something deep in his chest cracked open.
She had kept her eyes down the entire time.
Hands folded.
Quiet.
The way someone stands when they've learned that staying small keeps them safe.
"Julian." Victoria's voice cut through the silence like a blade.
"I said fire her.
Now."
"Where did you learn that song?" Julian asked softly.
The maid's hands trembled.
She didn't answer.
"Look at me," he said.
Slowly, she raised her eyes.
Julian felt the floor shift beneath him.
Victoria stepped between them instantly.
"She's nobody.
A maid from the agency.
I vetted her myself—"
"You vetted her." Julian's voice dropped.
"You.
Personally."
Something flickered across Victoria's face.
Not anger.
Fear.
Little Leo tugged Julian's sleeve and held up a crumpled piece of paper — a drawing.
Two stick figures.
One small boy.
One woman.
And underneath, in a four-year-old's unsteady handwriting, a single word:
*Mama.*
Victoria snatched for it.
Julian caught her wrist.
"Don't," he said quietly.
The maid had finally looked up — and now she was crying.
Not from fear.
From something that looked unbearably like recognition.
