Chapter 2: Four Words That Stopped My Heart

Part 2 ⬇️
I stood frozen in that doorway.
"Tell me what?" I managed to say.
"Who are you?"
She didn't answer right away.
She pressed the letter against her chest like she was trying to hide it from me — even though I was the one who had brought it.
"You should come inside," she said finally.
Her hands were still shaking as she led me to her kitchen table.
I sat across from her and watched her read the rest of the letter in silence.
With every line, her expression changed.
By the end, her eyes were wet.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
"I never wanted you to find out this way."
"Find out what?" My voice came out harder than I intended.
"How did you know my husband?"
She folded the letter carefully and set it on the table between us.
Then she said four words that stopped my heart.
"Zane was my father."
The room went completely still.
I couldn't breathe.
I couldn't speak.
She was maybe thirty years old.
The math wasn't impossible.
But thirty-four years of marriage — and he had never once —
Then she slid something else across the table.
A photograph.
Zane.
Younger.
Holding a baby.
On the back, in his handwriting: *Forgive me.*
