Chapter 2: The Name She Never Thought to Ask

The heavy ballroom doors sealed with a deep, mechanical thud.
Every guest froze.
Two men in dark suits appeared at the entrance.
No uniforms.
No badges.
Just quiet authority that silenced the room faster than any scream could.
Eleanor's laugh died in her throat.
"What is this?" Chloe demanded, spinning toward Daniel.
"What did she do?"
Daniel said nothing.

I made sure Eleanor could see the letterhead.
Her face went the color of ash.
"That's impossible," she whispered.
"That company was dissolved."
"No," I said quietly.
"It was transferred.
To me.
Three years ago."
Chloe grabbed her mother's arm.
"Mother.
What is she talking about?"
Eleanor's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I looked down at the matte-black access card still lying among my scattered belongings on the marble floor.
The one neither of them had recognized.
"You spent three years calling me penniless," I said.
"You never once asked who my father was."
Daniel finally spoke.
His voice cracked.
"Vivienne...
what exactly does your father do?"
I slid the card back into my wallet.
"Ask Eleanor.
She already knows."
