Chapter 1: The Day He Didn't Know

At the hospital, Ethan thought the worst part had already happened.

He had found his four-year-old daughter hungry.

He had watched paramedics carry his wife out of their home.

He had spent the night answering questions about Mara's health with the same humiliating answer over and over again:

"I don't know."

But the next morning, when he went home to get her clothes, he began noticing things he had somehow lived beside without ever truly seeing.

A preschool bill covered in calculations.

A sketchbook filled with drawings Mara had never shown him.

A prescription bottle dated five months earlier.

And page after page of their family life, drawn from the same strange perspective.

Ethan and Evie were always in the center.

Mara was usually somewhere near the edge.

Sometimes only her hand appeared.

Sometimes her reflection.

Sometimes she wasn't in the picture at all.

Later, when Evie was finally allowed into the hospital room, she climbed carefully beside her mother and stayed still for a long time.

Mara stroked her hair, waiting for the questions everyone expected a frightened child to ask.

Evie asked something else.

"Mommy…

did you sleep because I was bad?"

Mara's hand stopped.

Ethan looked away.

And in that moment, the problem inside their family suddenly became much larger than the day Mara stopped waking up.
