Chapter 2: She Already Has
Mr.
Hale arrived at 9:00 a.m.
with two documents and a calm expression that told me he had done this before.
Mom opened the door in her robe.
She smiled when she saw the suit.
"Finally," she said.
"Emily sent someone to sort out the mortgage."
"Mrs.
Calloway," he said, "I'm not here about the mortgage."
He handed her the first document.
She read three lines and her face changed.
"What is this?"
"A notice of trustee enforcement.
You have sixty days to vacate or negotiate a formal lease agreement with the successor trustee."
Mom looked past him at me standing on the driveway.
"Emily.
What did you do?"
"I did what Grandpa asked me to do four years ago."
"That house is MINE.
My father left it to this family—"
"He left it to me," I said.
"You just never read the paperwork."
She turned back to Mr.
Hale.
"This is illegal.
She can't do this."
He handed her the second document.
"She already has."
That was when Jenna's car pulled up.
She stepped out, still in workout clothes, phone in hand.
She looked at Mr.
Hale, then at Mom, then at me.
"What's going on?"
Mom's voice cracked for the first time in my memory.
"Your sister is taking the house."
Jenna went very still.
Then she said something I never expected — something that told me she had known about the trust the entire time.
