Chapter 2: The Message On The Table

— PART 2 —

I walked straight to the center of the table and set my plate down in front of Barbara's husband, Gerald.

"Here," I said clearly.

"Since Barbara is so concerned about how I look, I'll let her eat my portion too."

The silence got heavier.

Then I turned to face the whole table.

"I gave birth eight months ago.

I grew a human being.

And I will not sit at this table and be publicly humiliated for it."

Barbara's smile finally cracked.

"I was only trying to help, sweetheart.

No need to be so dramatic—"

"You planned this," I said.

"You plated everyone's food in the kitchen.

You chose what went on my plate.

This wasn't a mistake."

A few of the cousins looked down.

Liam had gone completely still.

Then his sister, Diane, quietly pushed her own plate away.

"She's right," Diane said.

"Mom, you've done this kind of thing before.

Just not this openly."

Barbara's face went pale.

But it was what Liam did next that no one saw coming.

He reached into his jacket pocket and placed his phone face-up on the table.

His hands weren't shaking.

His voice was steady.

"Mom," he said quietly.

"I think it's time we talked about the message you sent Diane last week."
