Chapter 2: The Envelope She Was Never Meant to See

I knew her.
Not well.
But enough.
She was the woman from Robert's oncology ward — the one who'd sat across from me in the waiting room during his worst treatments.
We'd shared bad coffee and worse news.
I'd even hugged her once when her own husband's results came back.
Her name was Diane.
Robert's face had gone the color of ash.
"Lucy," he said again, but his voice had changed.
It wasn't firm anymore.
It was something closer to afraid.
"Tell her, Grandpa." Lucy's chin was trembling, but she didn't move.
"You said secrets hurt people.
You told me that."
Our daughter took a step forward.
"Dad, what is going on?"
Robert looked at me — not at Diane, not at the guests — just at me.
And in thirty-seven years, I had never seen that expression on his face.
"Ellen," he said quietly.
"I can explain."
Those three words hit harder than anything else could have.
Diane stood up slowly.
She looked like she wanted to disappear.
Instead, she reached into her bag and pulled out a small folded envelope.
"He asked me not to bring this today," she said, her voice breaking.
"But I think she needs to see it."
She held it out toward me.
My hands wouldn't move.
---
What was inside that envelope — and why had Robert been meeting Diane every Friday in secret?
