Chapter 2: What Grandma Said

Clara looked straight at Beatrice and said, in the clearest, most serious little voice:

"Grandma, my doctor says I'm perfectly healthy.

He said I should eat when I'm hungry." She paused.

"He also said that saying mean things about people's bodies isn't healthy either."

The table went absolutely still.

Beatrice's smile didn't fade slowly.

It collapsed.

My husband let out a breath that was half laugh, half shock.

Across the table, his sister pressed her hand over her mouth.

But Beatrice recovered fast.

That was the thing about her — she always recovered fast.

"I was only trying to help," she said, her voice hardening beneath the sweetness.

"Someone in this family has to care about these things."

That's when my husband finally pushed back his chair.

"Mom." His voice was quiet.

Controlled.

"Enough."

Beatrice turned to him slowly, and something shifted in her expression.

Not embarrassment.

Something colder than that.

"You're choosing her side again," she said.

"After everything I've done for this family."

"This isn't about sides," he said.

"This is about our daughter."

Beatrice set down her fork.

She folded her napkin with slow, deliberate hands.

Then she said something that made my bl00d run c0ld.
