Chapter 1: The Toast That Broke Everything

At our daughter's wedding, my husband raised his glass and announced he was leaving me after 32 years of marriage — what my daughter did next left the entire reception stunned.
For 32 years, I believed my husband, Adriel, and I had built a marriage that would last forever.
We raised our only daughter, Juliette, built a home, survived hard years, and reached a stage where I thought the hardest parts were behind us.
Adriel didn't always see it that way.
Over the years, he often spoke about how much he'd sacrificed for our family.
Whenever work or bills got stressful, he'd complain that everything rested on his shoulders and that he was tired of being responsible for everyone.
Sometimes he'd say, "Maybe when Juliette has a life of her own, I can finally start living mine."
I never saw it as a threat to our marriage.
I thought he was simply tired and looking forward to fewer responsibilities, like most parents eventually do.
So when Juliette announced her engagement four months ago, I was overjoyed.
Adriel seemed happy too, often mentioning that our daughter was finally "settled."
At the time, I didn't think much of it.
On her wedding day, I was emotional, proud, and trying not to cry every five minutes.
Then it was time for the toasts.
Adriel stood, raised his glass, and congratulated Juliette and her new husband, wishing them a long, happy marriage.
Everyone applauded, but instead of sitting down, Adriel turned toward me.
"And since everyone we care about is already here, there's something else I need to say."
He paused and looked straight at me.
"I'm leaving you.
Our marriage is over, and when we get home, I'm moving out."
For a second, everything inside me stopped.
I couldn't process what I'd heard as the room fell silent and everyone stared at Adriel in shock.
Then Juliette pushed back her chair and stood.

She looked at me, then turned to her father.
And what she did next left everyone in the room stunned.
