Chapter 2: The Name on the Screen

The first page was a bank transfer.
$15,000.
Daniel's name at the top.
Chloe's account at the bottom.
His mother picked it up before anyone could stop her.
The second page was a message.
Daniel's words, printed in black and white: *"You don't need to worry about Jennifer.
I have a plan to handle that side of things."*
His father set down his glass.
"Daniel." His mother's voice had dropped to something I had never heard from her before.
"What is this?"
Daniel grabbed my wrist under the table.
Hard.
"Jennifer, stop.
You don't understand what you're doing."
I looked down at his hand.
Then I looked up at him.
"Let go of me," I said.
"Or the next thing I place on this table is the attorney's letter."
He let go.
His coworker near the far end of the table leaned forward.
"Is that…
a transfer to another woman?"
Daniel stood up.
His chair scraped loud across the floor.
"This isn't what it looks like—"
"Then explain it." His mother's hands were shaking.
"Explain it right now, in front of everyone."
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that was when my phone buzzed on the table.
A name lit up the screen.
Chloe.
