Chapter 2: What the Nurse Remembered

She said Ewan hadn't d*ed in that fire.

I sat very still.

The monitors kept their rhythm.

Outside the window the snow was still coming down.

"He was pulled out," Delia said.

"Someone got him out before the roof went.

I know because I was there.

I was seventeen.

He was the one who carried me to the sidewalk."

Six years.

Six years of a grave with his name on it.

"Then where is he?" My voice came out quieter than I expected.

She turned back from the window and looked at me directly for the first time.

"That's what Celeste doesn't want you to find out."

My phone lit up on the chair beside me.

A message from the house.

No words — just a photo.

The cellar door.

Open.

And the light on inside.

Celeste was still at the estate.

I stood up.

Delia reached out and caught my wrist with her uninjured hand.

Her grip was stronger than it had any right to be.

"There's a name," she said.

"A man who has known where Ewan is for four years.

Celeste has been paying him to stay quiet." She paused.

"He works for you."

Someone in my own organization had been keeping my brother's secret.

And my fiancée had been the one writing the checks.

I looked down at her hand on my wrist.

Then at her face.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

"Since the night your mother stopped being able to speak," she said.

"She told me everything.

Before she lost the words."
