Chapter 2: The Name Nobody Expected

PART 2 ⬇️
They pulled us out within seconds.
A crew member wrapped Ellie in a blanket.
Another reached for me, but Marcus was already there — his jacket off, his arms around us both before I could say a word.
Ellie buried her face in his chest.
"Daddy," she whispered.
He held her so tightly his knuckles went white.
Then he straightened and turned toward the deck.
The guests parted without being asked.
My mother hadn't moved.
She stood exactly where she had been when she shoved me — one hand still raised slightly, as if frozen mid-gesture.
"You must be Claire's mother," Marcus said.
His voice was calm.
That was the part that frightened people who knew him.
He never raised it.

Closed it.
My father stepped forward.
"Now, listen here — we didn't know she was—"
"You watched her fall," Marcus said.
"You watched a five-year-old child fall.

Nobody spoke.
Daniel had gone so pale his face looked grey under the lights.
Marcus glanced at him once — just once — then looked away, as if Daniel wasn't worth the full second.
He turned to the gray-haired attorney behind him.
"You have the documents?"
"Ready, sir."
My mother finally found her voice.
"What documents?"
Marcus looked at her for a long moment.
"The ones that explain exactly what you just did to my family — and what happens next because of it."
---
What was inside those documents — and what did Marcus Vale do next?
