Chapter 2: The Trophy She Carried

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood in the doorway of my own bedroom and didn't move.

Natalie didn't flinch.

She just sat there in my bathrobe, on my side of the bed, holding that test like it was a trophy.

"You should have signed the papers when he asked nicely," she said.

"Now it's going to get messy."

I heard Michael's footsteps on the stairs.

He stopped when he saw me.

For just a second, something crossed his face.

Not guilt.

Calculation.

"Rachel." His voice was flat.

"This doesn't have to be difficult.

Sign the transfer documents tonight and we'll leave quietly.

The house, the warehouses, the shares — you never wanted any of that anyway."

"You're right," I said.

"I didn't want any of it."

I reached into my purse and placed Robert's folder on the dresser.

"But my name is on all of it.

And I have the originals."

Michael's jaw tightened.

He glanced at Natalie.

She sat up slowly.

"You don't understand what you're holding," he said quietly.

"I understand exactly what I'm holding."

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from a number I didn't recognize.

*Rachel.

Don't sign anything tonight.

There's something in that file Michael doesn't know you've already seen.

Call me.

— R.H.*

I looked up at Michael.

His eyes dropped to my phone.

And for the first time in ten years, he looked afraid.
