Chapter 2: The Document Beneath the Marriage License

“We found Dad’s land.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What does Christopher have to do with it?”
“More than he ever admitted,” Lucas replied.
“Go back inside.
I need to see what he asks you to sign.”
When I entered the reception hall, Christopher was waiting with Florence and a man holding a leather folder.
“There you are,” Christopher said.
“You embarrassed my family, but we can still fix this.”
“Fix it how?”
Florence pushed a glass toward me.
“Drink something, calm down, and sign the wedding papers.”
The man opened the folder.
Beneath the marriage license was another document.
“What is that?” I asked.
“Just a standard property agreement,” Christopher said quickly.
Then I saw my father’s full name.
Samuel was standing behind me.
His face changed when he noticed a parcel number printed at the bottom.
“That number belongs to our coastal land,” he whispered.
Christopher snatched the document away.
“You’re confused, Samuel.”
“No,” my father said.
“That land disappeared from our family records years ago.”
Florence’s smile vanished.
Before anyone could speak, the reception doors opened.
Lucas walked in carrying a thick envelope.
He looked at Christopher and placed it on the table.
“Tell Giselle,” he said, “why your company filed a secret claim on her father’s land three weeks before proposing to her.”
Christopher went pale—but Florence whispered something that made Lucas freeze.
