Chapter 1: The Coat He Asked Me to Wear

At my husband's funeral, my stepdaughter humiliated me in front of the entire church because of the coat I was wearing.
Twenty minutes later, she wished she'd never opened her mouth.
My name is Ellie.
I'm 58.
Two days ago, I buried the man I'd loved for twenty years.
Thomas d*ed after a long battle with cancer.
A few days before he passed, he asked me for one last favor.
"Promise me you'll wear your old gray coat to my funeral."
I glanced at the coat hanging in the closet and laughed.
"It barely fits anymore."
"I know," he smiled.
"But promise me."
So I did.
The moment my stepdaughter, Vivienne, saw me stepping into the church, I knew exactly what she was thinking.
Vivienne and I had never gotten along.
No matter how hard I tried, she never accepted me as part of the family.
To her, I wasn't Thomas's wife.
I was just the woman who married her father.
Her eyes immediately landed on the old gray coat.
The fabric was faded.
One button was loose.
Surrounded by expensive black suits and elegant dresses, it looked completely out of place.
She waited until everyone was seated.
Then, loud enough for the entire church to hear, she said,
"Couldn't you have bought something decent for Dad's funeral?
You're embarrassing this family."
The room fell silent.
I felt every pair of eyes turn toward me, but I didn't defend myself.
Thomas had asked me to wear that coat, and I wasn't about to break the last promise I'd ever made to him.
Twenty minutes later, everyone gathered in the lawyer's office for the reading of his will.
Vivienne looked almost excited.
She'd spent weeks telling relatives that Dad was leaving everything to her.
Before opening the will, the lawyer looked directly at me.
"Did Thomas ask you to wear a particular coat today?"
My heart skipped.
"Yes."
He nodded.
"Then before I read another word...
please check the inside lining."
With everyone watching, I slipped my hand beneath the fabric.
My fingers touched something sewn into the lining.
I looked up.
Vivienne had gone completely pale.
For the first time that day, she didn't look confident anymore.
