I stared at the report, unable to breathe.
“My daughter?” I whispered.
“That’s impossible.
Why would you leave me in foster care?”
Gavin’s expression softened.
“I didn’t leave you, Serena.
I was told you never survived the night you were born.”
Patrick snatched up the dossier.
“This proves nothing.
She could be anyone.”
The senior attorney calmly turned to another page.
“Then perhaps you can explain this,” he said.
“Two years before marrying Serena, you paid a private investigator to access her sealed foster records.”
My hands began to shake.
“You knew?” I asked Patrick.
“No!” he snapped.
“He’s twisting everything!”
Gavin placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Patrick meeting the investigator outside Vanguard Global’s headquarters.
“You didn’t marry my daughter by accident,” Gavin said coldly.
“You chose her because of who she was.”
Chloe suddenly stood.
“Patrick, you promised she would never discover the trust!”
The entire courtroom fell silent.
Patrick spun toward her.
“Be quiet!”
But it was too late.
Gavin opened a second envelope and looked directly at me.
“Serena, your husband wasn’t trying to leave you with nothing,” he said.
“He was trying to take something you never knew belonged to you.”
