Chapter 2: The Photograph That Knew His Name

Victoria didn't even look at him.

She kept her eyes on me — only me — as she reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope, worn at the edges like it had been carried for years.

"I have been looking for you since the day they took you from me," she said quietly.

"You were three days old."

My legs nearly gave out.

Ethan's lawyer grabbed his arm and whispered something sharp.

Ethan shook him off.

"This is insane," Ethan snapped.

"She has no birth certificate.

No proof.

She grew up in the foster system — she told me herself."

Victoria finally turned to look at him.

Just once.

Slowly.

"She grew up in the foster system," Victoria said, "because someone made sure she would."

The room went completely still.

Judge Reynolds leaned forward.

"Mrs.

Kensington," he said carefully.

"Are you presenting new evidence to this court?"

Victoria placed the envelope on the judge's bench without a word.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman holding a newborn.

The young woman had my face.

Ethan stared at it.

His smug expression cracked — just slightly — and something else moved behind his eyes.

Not surprise.

Fear.

He had seen that photograph before.
