Chapter 2: What My Son Carried to the Microphone

Noah's voice came through the microphone small and steady.

"Uncle Ethan.

Do you remember what you told me at Christmas?"

The room was completely silent.

Ethan's smile was gone.

He shifted in his chair but said nothing.

"You told me that a real man never lets anyone hurt his family." Noah paused.

"You made me promise to remember that."

Someone near the back of the room made a soft sound.

Not laughter.

Something closer to shame.

Vanessa reached toward Noah's shoulder.

He took one small step away from her hand without looking up.

"My mom helped raise you," Noah continued.

"She told me that.

Grandma Diane told me that too, a long time ago.

Before tonight."

Diane's face changed.

The smile she had been wearing since the toast dissolved into something I had never seen on her before.

Noah looked at Ethan one more time.

"She never told anyone what she gave up for you.

But I know.

Because she told me."

Ethan finally stood.

His chair scraped back hard against the floor.

"Noah—" he started.

"I have it," Noah said quietly.

"Mom kept everything."

The room did not understand what that meant.

But Ethan did.

I could see it in the way the color left his face.

And so did Vanessa.
