Chapter 1: The Night He Showed Everyone Who He Really Was

At his promotion gala, my husband angrily splashed champagne across my dress.

"You pathetic hick!" he spat, before showing off his mistress in front of all the guests.

I made one call: "Fire the director immediately!"

---

Champagne splashed across the front of my dress before I realized my husband had raised the glass.

Then Daniel Mercer leaned close enough for two hundred executives to hear him hiss, "You pathetic hick.

Did you really think you belonged here?"

The ballroom went silent.

Crystal chandeliers glittered above the promotion gala for Vantage Meridian Group, one of the largest logistics companies on the East Coast.

Daniel had just been announced as Regional Operations Director, a position he had chased for six years.

I had spent those six years believing his success was ours.

Apparently, Daniel had spent them being ashamed of me.

Champagne dripped from my hair onto the simple navy dress I had chosen.

A few guests stared at the floor.

Others lifted phones.

Daniel smiled.

Not apologetically.

Triumphantly.

"You embarrass me every time you open your mouth," he said.

"The country accent, the cheap clothes, those ridiculous stories about your family farm."

A woman stepped beside him.

Vanessa Cole.

Daniel's executive assistant.

She wore a silver gown, diamonds at her throat, and the satisfied smile of someone who had been waiting months for this moment.

Daniel wrapped an arm around her waist.

"Since everyone important is already here," he announced, "I might as well stop pretending."

My stomach went cold.

Vanessa kissed his cheek.

Someone gasped.

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Vanessa understands the life I'm building.

You never did."

I slowly wiped champagne from my dress.

"What exactly are you saying?"

He laughed.

"I'm saying our marriage is over."

Vanessa tilted her head.

"Don't make a scene, Claire."

That almost made me smile.

They truly believed I was powerless.

Daniel had always assumed my money came from "some inheritance from Grandpa." He never asked questions because he was too busy spending it.

He did not know my grandfather had founded Harlow Capital.

He did not know I controlled the family trust.

And he certainly did not know Harlow Capital had quietly acquired thirty-eight percent of Vantage Meridian eighteen months earlier during its restructuring.

Daniel lifted another glass.

"Security can escort her out."

I glanced toward the ballroom entrance.

Then toward Chairman Robert Lang, who had suddenly gone pale.

He knew who I was.

Daniel didn't notice.

He was too busy kissing Vanessa while his new colleagues watched.

So I reached into my purse, took out my phone, and called the one person Daniel had never bothered learning existed.

"Eleanor?" I said calmly.

Our corporate counsel answered immediately.

"Yes, Mrs.

Mercer?"

I watched Daniel raise his glass to the crowd.
