Chapter 2: The Envelope She Was Never Supposed to Find

Emily didn't move toward Ryan.
She moved toward Lily.
She dropped to her knees right there in the doorway and pulled her daughter into her arms.
Lily was shaking so hard she could barely stand.
"I'm here, baby.
Mommy's here."
The whole ballroom watched in silence.
Then Ryan found his voice.
"You're supposed to be in the hospital.
You were in no condition to—"
"To what?" Emily looked up at him.
"To watch you marry someone else while our daughter cried for me?"
Vanessa grabbed Ryan's arm.
"Ryan.
Who is this woman?"
He didn't answer.
Emily slowly stood.
She reached into the small bag she was carrying and pulled out a folded envelope.
"I wasn't going to come," she said quietly.
"James begged me.
I almost said no." She looked at the envelope in her hands.
"Then I found this."
Ryan's face went white.
"Where did you get that?"
"You know where."
He stepped forward.
"Emily, don't."
She didn't look at him.
She looked at Vanessa.
"You should know what kind of man you just married."
Vanessa's smile was completely gone.
And whatever was inside that envelope — Ryan was willing to do anything to stop her from opening it.
