Chapter 4: Everything He Thought He'd Buried

Monday came grey and cold.
I was at my desk by seven-thirty.
The Northstar offices occupied the top two floors of a building four blocks from the Halcyon Hotel, and from my window I could see the hotel's glass facade catching the morning light.
I had not slept well.
Not because of Derek.
Because of Ruth Calloway's face when she said, *I should have done it sooner.*
My assistant, Priya, knocked at eight.
"Derek Bennett is in the lobby," she said.
"He doesn't have an appointment."
"I know." I set down my coffee.
"Send him up."
Priya hesitated.
"Do you want legal present?"
"Not yet."
He came in wearing the same suit he'd worn to the party.
Or one exactly like it.
He sat down across from me without being invited and put both hands flat on the desk.
"I want to negotiate," he said.
"Good morning, Derek."
"Don't." His voice was tight.
"We both know what this is.
You have the shares.
You have the investigation.
You have Ruth's documents." He leaned forward.
"But I have seven years of your personal financial records.
Joint accounts.
Transfers you made from our household account into Northstar before the acquisition was public.
A good attorney could argue insider positioning."
I looked at him.
"Is that a threat?"
"It's a fact."
I opened the folder on my desk.
I turned it to face him.
"The transfers you're referring to were made from my personal inheritance account, which has never been a joint account, into a holding entity established four years before we married." I tapped the top page.
"Your name appears nowhere in Northstar's founding documents.
Our prenuptial agreement, which you signed, specifies that all assets predating the marriage remain separate property." I closed the folder.
"Your attorney will find that out in approximately twenty minutes if they haven't already."
Derek stared at the folder.
"The prenup can be challenged."
"It was drafted by three separate firms and reviewed by a judge during our marriage license filing at your request." I paused.
"You wanted it ironclad because you were protecting assets from Ruth's settlement.
You protected mine at the same time."
His hands pressed harder against the desk.
"What do you want, Claire?"
"Your resignation from Aurelia Systems.
Dated Friday.
In exchange, the board will allow you to characterize it as a voluntary departure."
"And the investigation?"
"That is no longer in my hands.
The forensic accountant's findings have been referred to the appropriate authorities.
I don't control what they do with them."
"You could ask Malcolm to slow it down."
"I won't."
"Claire—"
"Derek." I kept my voice level.
"You hjt me in front of two hundred people.
You told me I was decorative.
You brought a woman wearing jewelry stolen from our home to a company event and stood her beside you like a replacement." I looked at him directly.
"There is no version of this conversation where I slow anything down."
His jaw worked.
"If I resign, I lose everything."
"You lose Aurelia.
You still have the townhouse, the car, and the investment account you opened in your sister's name in 2019." I watched his face.
"Yes.
We found that too."
The silence lasted a long time.
Derek stood up.
He buttoned his jacket.
He was doing the thing he always did when he needed to feel in control — straightening, adjusting, performing composure for an audience that was no longer impressed.
"I'll have my attorney review the resignation terms," he said.
"You have until five o'clock."
He walked to the door.
"For what it's worth," he said, without turning around, "I did love you.
In the beginning."
I looked at the folder on my desk.
"I know," I said.
"That's the part that took me the longest to get over."
He left.
Priya appeared in the doorway thirty seconds later.
"Legal?" she asked.
"Yes," I said.
"And get me Ruth Calloway's contact number.
I'd like to speak with her directly."
Priya nodded and started to go.
"Priya."
She stopped.
"Close the door behind you, please."
She did.
I sat alone for a moment.
The hotel glass was still catching the light across the street.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from a number I didn't recognize.
*You think this is finished.
It isn't.
There are things about Northstar you don't know yet.
Things I made sure of.
— D*
I read it twice.
May you like
Then I forwarded it to Malcolm and to legal.
And I thought: *What things?*
