Chapter 2: The Message That Disappeared

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️
---
Daniel was still staring at the date on Maria's statement.
"They had this ready before you even sat down at that table."
I couldn't speak.
My hands were shaking.
Mom put her arm around me.
"Emily.
Listen to me.
Maria came to our house last month.
Do you remember?"
I did.
She had stopped by on a Saturday.
Said she forgot something.
I hadn't thought anything of it.
"She was nervous," Mom said quietly.
"She kept looking at the door."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know what it meant.
I thought I was imagining things."
Daniel took the phone back and kept scrolling.
Then he stopped.
"There's a second name."
"What?"
He turned the screen toward me.
Beneath Maria's statement was a witness declaration.
Signed by Ryan's sister.
The same sister who had covered her smile with a wineglass at dinner.
She had written that she witnessed me threatening Diane on three separate occasions.
Three dates.
Three detailed descriptions.
None of them had ever happened.
"She was at every one of those dinners," I said.
"Yes," Daniel said.
"And she was watching you the whole time tonight."
My phone buzzed.
A text from a number I didn't recognize.
*Emily.
It's Maria.
I need to talk to you.
Please don't hate me.
I didn't have a choice.
They have something on me.*
I read it twice.
Then the message disappeared.
