Chapter 2: Five Words in Red

Part 2 ⬇️

The screen lit up the entire room.

Five words in bold red: **UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP DETECTED.**

The silence lasted maybe three seconds.

Then Vanessa's voice broke it.

"That's a mistake.

That has to be a mistake."

Elliot didn't flinch.

"The records are certified.

Every transaction.

Every signature.

Every date."

Derek grabbed Vanessa's arm and pulled her close, whispering something sharp into her ear.

She shook him off.

"Claire." My father's voice was barely above a whisper.

"What is this?"

I looked at him calmly.

"It's the truth, Dad.

The one you never asked for."

Mother stepped forward, her face tight.

"You did this to humiliate your sister.

On her biggest night—"

"She missed three loan payments." My voice was steady.

"If I hadn't held Hawthorne back, you would have lost everything.

Again."

The room was completely still.

Then one of the representatives placed a single document on the table in front of my father.

"Mr.

Harmon, this is the original financing agreement.

Signed seven years ago." He paused.

"By Claire.

Not by Derek.

Not through any outside connection."

My father stared at the paper.

His hands were shaking.

Vanessa turned to me, and for the first time all evening, her voice had no confidence left in it.

"You were supposed to stay quiet."

"I know," I said.

"I did.

For seven years."

But what Vanessa said next made my mother gasp and grab the back of her chair.
