Chapter 2: What the Folder Knew

**PART 2**

"You selfish little witch!

Do you know what you've done?"

Theresa's voice was so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

"The mortgage payment bounced.

The electricity is showing a warning.

Daniel's card was declined at the gas station this morning.

Fix it.

Fix it right now."

I sat at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee and said nothing for a moment.

"Mariana.

Are you listening to me?"

"I'm listening," I said.

"Then explain yourself!"

"I cancelled the payments," I said calmly.

"All of them."

Dead silence.

Then: "You can't do that.

That money is for this family."

"It was my money, Theresa.

It was always my money."

She hung up.

Twelve minutes later, Daniel called.

He didn't ask how I was.

He didn't mention the dinner.

His first words were: "Mom says you stopped everything.

What is wrong with you?"

I almost laughed.

But then my phone buzzed with an email.

It was from Robert, my accountant.

The subject line read: *Mariana — you need to see this before you make any decisions.*

Attached was a folder.

Inside were bank statements — not mine.

Transfers I had never authorized.

A name I didn't recognize appearing again and again.

And one of the transfers was dated the same night as the dinner.

I stared at the screen.

My hands went still.

Someone had been using my payments as cover for something much worse.
