Chapter 2: The Envelope She Never Expected to See

Emily walked slowly across the garden.
Every step was deliberate.
She wasn't rushing.
She wasn't nervous.
The wealthy woman couldn't move.
When Emily finally stopped in front of her, she didn't hug her.
She didn't cry.
She simply looked at her the way someone looks at a person they have spent years preparing to face.
"You look exactly the same," Emily said quietly.
"I used to think that was a compliment."
"Emily, I—"
"Don't." Her voice was calm but firm.
"I didn't come here for an apology."
The teenage boy stood slightly behind his mother, watching.
The wealthy woman's eyes moved to him, then back to Emily.
"Then why did you come?"
Emily reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.
She held it out but didn't let go of it yet.
"Because thirty years ago, you signed something.
And I need to know if you understood what you were signing."
The wealthy woman stared at the envelope.
Her face had gone very still.
"Where did you get that?"
"It was in the same box as the photograph."
A long silence fell between them.
Then the wealthy woman said something so quietly that only Emily could hear it.
Emily's expression didn't break.
But her son saw her hand tighten around the envelope.
And that was when a second car pulled up to the edge of the property.
