Chapter 2: The Document With Her Signature
Emily walked slowly across the garden.
Every step was deliberate.
Every eye at the party followed her.
The wealthy woman didn't move.
She stood holding the photograph so tightly her knuckles had gone white.
When Emily finally stopped in front of her, she didn't smile.
"Hello, Diane."
The name hit the crowd like a stone dropped into still water.
Diane.
The woman everyone at this party called Mrs.
Hargrove.
The woman whose name was on the new children's hospital wing.
The woman who had spent thirty years building a life that looked perfect from every angle.
"You need to leave," Diane said.
Her voice was steady but her eyes weren't.
"Whatever you think you know—"
"I don't think anything." Emily reached into her coat and pulled out a folded document.
"I know."
Diane stared at it.
"That's not—"
"It has your signature on it, Diane.
And a date.
Three weeks after I disappeared."
The boy stepped beside his mother.
"Tell her what it says," he said quietly.
"Or I will."
Diane's gaze moved from the document to the boy.
Something shifted in her expression.
Not guilt.
Something colder than guilt.
"How old are you?" she asked him.
The boy looked back at her without blinking.
"Old enough to understand what you did to her."
Diane's hand moved slightly toward her phone.
And Emily said: "Don't.
He's already here."
Diane looked up.
Across the garden, a man in a dark jacket was watching them.
He hadn't been there a moment ago.
