Inside the box was a thick manila envelope — and a framed photo.

Carl's smile vanished the second he saw it.

The photo was of him and Sheila.

Not at work.

Not at some innocent lunch.

At a hotel.

Dated three months ago.

The room went dead quiet.

David's voice was calm and steady into the microphone.

"Carl, I've been made aware of some conduct that violates our company's workplace policy.

Effective tonight, your position has been terminated."

Carl's face went white.

"You can't do this," he snapped.

"This is personal.

This has nothing to do with work."

David didn't raise his voice.

"The envelope contains documentation of fourteen policy violations, including falsified expense reports and the misuse of company funds.

HR has been notified.

Legal will follow up Monday morning."

Sheila took a step back from Carl.

Then another.

Carl turned to her.

"Sheila — say something."

She looked at the floor.

I sat in that corner watching my husband of 23 years unravel in front of every single person we worked with.

And then David walked over to me, held out his hand, and said quietly:

"There's one more thing you need to know.

About the house."
