Chapter 1: The Dimples Were Still There

At 79, I drove 1,000 miles to see the man I'd never stopped loving — when he vanished the next morning, I refused to lose him twice.
I first met Thomas when I was 29.
A mutual friend introduced us after one of his taekwondo competitions.
He was confident, athletic, with those ridiculous dimples that appeared every time he smiled.
I thought meeting him would just be fun.
Then we spent six hours talking.
And I realized there was something between us.
Chemistry.
The kind you don't forget.
But a few weeks later, Thomas disappeared.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
For fifty years, I wondered why.
Then, at 79, I found him again.
Thomas was 84 now.
His hair was silver and he moved slower, but when he smiled...
The dimples were still there.
So I drove more than 1,000 miles to see him.
That evening, we walked through the city until midnight, laughing about how much we'd aged.
At a tiny bar, he ordered his favorite drink — gin with quince syrup.
He raised his glass.
"To second chances."
For one night, I felt 29 again.
The next morning, I called him.
No answer.
By noon, his phone was off.
By evening, I knew.
He had disappeared again.
Fifty years ago, I cried and let him go.
Not this time.
What did I have left to lose?
I drove straight to his house.
His car was outside.
The front door was unlocked.
"Thomas?"
Nothing.
His glass was still beside the sink.
Then I noticed an old photograph on the kitchen table.
It was us.
Taken the night we first met.
But someone had circled my face in red ink.
My hands started shaking.
I climbed the stairs and found Thomas's bedroom empty.
But beside his bed was an open suitcase.
Then the front door slammed downstairs.
I heard footsteps.
---
What happened to Thomas — and who just walked through that door?
