Chapter 1: The Door That Changed Everything

At 75, I used my last frozen egg to become a mother — three days after my daughter was born, a 42-year-old woman knocked on my door.
I was thirty-three when I froze my eggs.
Back then, I was convinced I'd become a mother someday.
But someday never came.
No husband.
No children.
And eventually, I stopped believing it ever would.
Then, at seventy-five, I made a decision everyone called crazy.
I used my last remaining frozen egg and found a surrogate.
Nine months later, I held my daughter, Grace, for the first time.
She was perfect.
I couldn't stop crying.
After forty-two years of waiting...
I was finally someone's mom.
Three days after bringing Grace home, someone knocked on my door.
A woman stood outside.
She looked about forty.
Her eyes were red from crying.
"Are you Margaret?"
"Yes."
She stared at the baby in my arms.
Then she whispered:
"Was she born three days ago?"
My stomach tightened.
"Who are you?"
"The clinic called me yesterday after your daughter was born."
I felt my arms draw tighter around Grace.
"Why would they call you?"
Instead of answering, she slowly reached inside her coat...
