Chapter 2: The Paper With the Wrong Signature

I stared at Chloe for a long moment.
Her eyes were red.
She had clearly been crying for some time before she found the courage to knock.
"Chloe," I said slowly.
"What did you hear?"
She pressed her lips together, then spoke.
"Tonight, after you went to your study, Mrs.
Gwen made a phone call.
I was in the hallway.
She didn't know I was still there."
My chest tightened.
"She told whoever was on the line…
that it was almost time.
That the new documents were ready.
That once everything was signed, they wouldn't have to wait much longer."
I felt the room shift beneath me.
"Documents?" I said.
"What documents?"
Chloe reached into her apron pocket and placed a folded piece of paper on my desk.
"I found this on the kitchen counter this afternoon.
I didn't understand it then.
But after what I heard tonight…
Mr.
Franklin, this has your signature on it.
Except you never signed anything today."
I unfolded it slowly.
My hands were not steady.
It was a financial transfer authorization.
A large one.
And at the bottom — my name, in handwriting that was almost mine.
But not quite.
Before I could speak, we both heard footsteps in the hallway.
Then Gwen's voice, low and calm, just outside the door.
"Franklin?
Are you still awake?"
Chloe's face went white.
