Chapter 2: He Never Knew Either

Inside the box was a single envelope.

My name was written on it in Thomas's handwriting.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I sat down at the kitchen table and stared at it for a long time before I could bring myself to open it.

Inside was a letter.

And two photographs.

The first photograph stopped my breath.

It was me.

Eighteen years old.

Standing outside my mother's house.

I had never given Thomas that photo.

The second photograph was of a boy.

Maybe seven or eight years old.

Dark hair.

A smile I recognized but couldn't place.

On the back, Thomas had written four words.

*He never knew either.*

I dropped the photograph.

My daughter walked in and saw my face.

"Mom?

What's wrong?"

I couldn't speak.

She picked up the letter and started reading.

Halfway through, she went completely still.

"Mom." Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Did you know you were pregnant when Thomas left?"

The room tilted.

"What?"

She held up the letter with trembling hands.

"He knew.

He says he knew.

And he says he made a decision that he spent the rest of his life regretting."

I couldn't breathe.

Because I had never known.

Not once.

Not for fifty-five years.
