Chapter 2: What He Never Said Out Loud

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
The letter was only one page.
But every word hit me like a stone.
Thomas hadn't left because he stopped loving me.
He'd left because he was trying to protect me.
The first line read: *"If you're reading this, I'm gone.
And I'm sorry it took me a lifetime to tell you the truth."*
He had been diagnosed — just weeks before he ended things with me.
Something serious.
Something the doctors said would take him within a year.
He was twenty-two years old.
He didn't want me to watch him d*e.
Didn't want me to give up my life waiting beside a hospital bed.
So he wrote that cold, short letter.
And he disappeared.
But he didn't d*e that year.
He survived.
And he spent the next fifty-five years carrying the weight of what he'd done to me.
The journal was worse.
I flipped to the first page and saw a date — the same month he left me.
And tucked inside the front cover was a photograph.
It was me.
Eighteen years old.
Standing outside my parents' house.
He had kept it all those years.
I turned to the last entry.
Written just four days before he called me.
The final line stopped my breath completely.
