Chapter 2: The Name She Never Said

"You're not supposed to be here" — those words kept ringing in my ears.
The alarm was screaming.
Richard's hand was still on my arm.
"Let go of me."
He did.
But he didn't move away.
"Listen to me," he said, his voice low and urgent.
"Those photographs are not what you think."
"Then what are they?"
He glanced toward the corridor.
Like he was checking for someone.
"I've been watching you since before we boarded.
I know that sounds wrong.
But I need you to trust me right now."
"Trust you?" I nearly laughed.
"My suitcase is outside your cabin.
You have pictures of me from before we even met.
And you want me to trust you?"
He stepped closer.
"Your daughter hired me."
I stopped breathing.
"What did you just say?"
"She was worried about you traveling alone.
She asked me to keep an eye on you.
That's all this was supposed to be."
Supposed to be.
Those two words hit me harder than anything else.
I looked at the photographs again.
Then back at him.
"Which daughter?"
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
Because I only have one daughter.
And we hadn't spoken in three years.

What Richard said next made my legs go weak.
