Chapter 5: The First Confrontation

Richard Carter called at eleven forty-three that morning.

Emma was still at the police station with Patricia and Detective Bell when her phone lit up on the table beside her.

She looked at Bell.

He nodded.

She answered and put it on speaker.

"Emma." Her father's voice was measured.

Warm, even.

The voice he used at church and at dinner parties and whenever he needed someone to believe he was a reasonable man.

"How is Ruby this morning?"

"She has a concussion and bruising on her jaw," Emma said.

"She's six years old."

"We're all devastated about what happened."

"Are you."

A brief pause.

"Of course we are.

Vanessa is beside herself.

You know how she gets when—"

"Dad." Emma kept her voice flat.

"I know about the document."

Silence.

Not long.

Two seconds, maybe three.

But Richard Carter was not a man who went silent by accident.

"I don't know what you mean," he said.

"Gerald Foss.

The co-guardianship agreement.

The version from fourteen months ago and the revised version from three months ago.

I have copies of both."

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"That was meant to be a family conversation," Richard said.

"A private matter.

Whoever gave you those documents violated—"

"A six-year-old child is in a hospital bed," Emma said.

"We are past private matters."

"Emma." His tone shifted.

Still controlled, but with an edge underneath it now.

"You need to think very carefully about what you're doing.

You are a military officer.

You have a career.

You have a reputation.

If this becomes a legal matter, things will come out that you won't be able to put back."

Bell's pen stopped moving.

Emma looked at the wall.

"What things?" she said.

"The deployments.

The gaps.

The instability." A pause.

"Judges look at those things, Emma.

I'm trying to protect you."

"You're trying to protect Vanessa."

"I'm trying to keep this family together."

"You should have thought about that before you had a document drafted to take my daughter from me."

"Nobody was taking Ruby from you." His voice rose slightly.

"It was a precaution.

You're gone for months at a time.

Vanessa is here.

Your mother is here.

Ruby needs stability."

"Ruby needed to be safe at your dinner table last night."

The line went quiet.

Emma waited.

When Richard spoke again, the warmth was completely gone.

"You have always been difficult," he said.

"Even as a child.

You never understood that this family works because everyone plays their part.

Vanessa needs more.

She always has.

That's not her fault.

You were always the strong one.

We needed you to be strong enough to give a little more."

Emma stared at the phone.

Thirty-eight years of her life in three sentences.

"I gave everything I had," she said quietly.

"And then I left.

And I built a life.

And I had a daughter.

And last night your other daughter put that child's face into a table."

"It was a moment.

One moment."

"It was the end," Emma said.

"Of all of it."

She ended the call.

Bell set his pen down.

"He just told a military officer on a recorded line that he would use her service record against her in a custody proceeding," he said.

"Yes," Emma said.

"That's going to be relevant."

"I know."

Bell's colleague, a compact woman named Agent Sandra Reyes from the financial crimes unit, looked up from the documents Patricia had provided.

"The attorney who drafted these," Reyes said.

"Gerald Foss.

He's been with your family how long?"

"Since before I was born," Emma said.

"Then he knows exactly what he drafted." Reyes tapped the second document.

"This language isn't ambiguous.

He knew this wasn't a standard family arrangement.

He drafted it to look like one."

"Can you prove that?"

Reyes looked at her steadily.

"Give me forty-eight hours."

Emma's phone buzzed again.

A text from Vanessa.

*Dad says you're making this into something it isn't.

I'm sorry about Ruby.

I really am.

But if you go through with this you will destroy this family and you will never forgive yourself.*

Emma read it once.

May you like

Then she forwarded it to Bell.

"Add it to the file," she said.
