Chapter 2: The Others

— Part 2 —
A woman's voice.
Low.
Familiar.
"You need to tell her, David.
Tonight."
I pressed myself against the wall, barely breathing.
"I can't," he said.
"Not yet."
"You've been saying that for three days.
She leaves tomorrow morning."
Silence.
Then David, quieter: "She's not like the others, Catherine."
*The others.*
My chest went cold.
"That's what you said last time," the woman replied.
"And the time before that."
I heard him exhale slowly.
"This is different."
"Is it?
Because from where I'm standing, it looks exactly the same."
I couldn't move.
Couldn't breathe.
Couldn't make sense of what I was hearing.
*Last time.
The time before that.
The others.*
What had I walked into?
I took one small step back — and my heel caught the edge of a stone.
The sound was tiny.
But David went completely silent.
Then, very carefully, he said:
"Is someone there?"
I didn't answer.
I couldn't.
Because in that moment, I looked down and saw something on the ground near the courtyard entrance.
A woman's scarf.
Pale blue.
Neatly folded.
The exact same scarf David had admired on me the day we met — and told me he'd never seen before.
