Preston didn't go to work that morning.
He poured himself a drink instead.
At 7 a.m.
Natalie watched him from the hallway, one hand on her stomach, saying nothing.
Then his phone buzzed on the counter.
He reached for it too fast.
Natalie saw the name on the screen before he flipped it face down.
Sloan.
"She's checking on her investment?" Natalie asked quietly.
"Don't do that."
"Which part bothers you more, Preston?
That I found the transfers — or that I can prove where they went?"
He set down his glass.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"SMR Advisory Group was registered eight months ago." Natalie's voice didn't shake.
"The same week you told me the baby account was fully funded.
The same week you bought me that Cartier bracelet for our anniversary." She paused.
"You bought us matching gifts."
The color left his face.
"Natalie—"
"There's one more thing I didn't mention this morning."
She reached into the envelope and placed a single sheet on the table between them.
Preston looked down.
His hand went still.
It was a wire confirmation.
$61,000.
Sent the day after their last prenatal appointment.
The one he had canceled.
The recipient was not SMR Advisory Group.
It was a private attorney.
Natalie watched his expression and understood, for the first time, that the money was only part of what he had been hiding.
